Getting to know Karlyn

Karlyn has been working professionally with a wide variety of animals for almost ten years. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she has explored many corners of the country, living in New York City, the US Virgin Islands, and eventually settling here in Grand Rapids. We are so glad she found her way to us!

She began her animal care career working with fish, sea turtles, sharks, and other marine animals at an aquarium on the island of St Thomas, an American territory in the Caribbean. She is passionate about animals of all species, shapes, and sizes, and loves being able to bring her caring personality and high level experience back with her to the mainland to provide the best possible care to all pets who stay here with us at Brooknelle.

In her free time, she loves reading, exploring the outdoors, spending time with her own pup Brewer and kitty Calvin, and volunteering with a local wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. Here at Brooknelle, Karlyn particularly loves helping new pets settle into their stay, building relationships with regular visitors, and being able to greet all of our canine, feline, and human guests from the front desk! Her favorite dog breeds are mixes and mutts because each one is totally unique and special.

Dog Destinations in Grand Rapids & Beyond

The sunny season is finally upon us, which means it’s time to roll out our new summer series! All summer long, we will be highlighting some of our favorite pet-friendly activities, businesses, destinations, and events around the Grand Rapids area so you and your furry friends can enjoy a fun filled season together.

We know it can be overwhelming rifling through all of the pet friendly options out there, so we’ve put together a few staff favorites. This week, we’re starting with a perfect outdoor adventure for the whole family, including humans and canines alike.

Grand Ravines County Park , located in Ottawa County just a short 15-20 minute drive from Grand Rapids, offers a perfect getaway day for you and your furry friend. With over 200 acres of park land and miles of hiking trails along the Grand River, there is no shortage of wildlife and natural beauty to soak in with your pup. This season in particular is perfect for spotting bald eagles as they hunt for fish along the river, and at least one active nest has been reported within the park limits!

If your dog prefers a good run off leash or enjoys playing with other dogs, the park also boasts a 21 acre dog park ! The dog park includes tons of space for your pup to run around and socialize, off leash trails for even more adventure, and even a bathing station and water fountains specifically for your furry friend.

After a long day spent running around and playing in the sunshine, treat yourself to a nice cold drink at one of the many dog friendly patios around the area. One that stands out is Trail Point Brewing Company , a chill taphouse-style bar serving up local brews with a gorgeous outdoor patio that’s perfect for hanging out with your pup. The spot includes a rotating schedule of food trucks, and also allows food brought from home or delivered from nearby restaurants to enjoy along with one of their delicious craft beers and ciders. It’s the perfect way to end the perfect sunny day with your best furry friend!

Introducing Brooknelle's Daycare Program Manager, Emily!

Emily grew up on the East side of the state before attending Grand Valley State University & calling Grand Rapids home. She graduated with a degree in Wildlife Biology & Environmental Sustainability. Emily has over 4 years of experience in the professional pet boarding/dog day care /veterinary field in and has also worked in avian and wildlife care. She specializes in assessing a dog’s temperament and finding them a best friend. Emily has a soft spot for shy dogs; her favorite part of the job is helping them come out of their shells and see their silly personalities shine through once they warm up. H er favorite dog breeds are c ollies -- but only because her own pup, Arnie, is a rough collie! She also has a cat named Pickles and a love for sassy kitties.

Emily spends her free time hiking, looking for fun critters , thrift shopping, reading, and camping. All of the pets at Brooknelle LOVE Emily and so do we!

Meet Mars!

Renee shares more about her 3 year old German Shorthaired Pointer, Mars:

How did you find him?
We got Mars while we lived in Chicago at Border Tails Rescue in Northbrook, Illinois! We came across him on their website and applied for adoption. Mars had been at the shelter for 6 months so he was really looking for a home. When we met him, it was love at first sight!

Did you choose his name?
Mars came with his name! He’s named after Bruno Mars (He came to the shelter with his brother, Bruno).

What is your favorite thing about his personality?
Although Mars is shy, he's very kind and loving. He loves to cuddle! He also is very awkward and has the funniest facial expressions!

His favorite toys/treats are: anything chicken or peanut butter! He also loves dental chews! His favorite toys are his stuffed squirrel, his stuffed dinosaur, and his rope toys.

How does daycare help Mars?
It helps him improve his sociability and relationships with other dogs and humans. He also gets so much exercise out of it and we've noticed he's a lot happier!

We have LOVED watching Mars make friends and get his zoomies out in the back play yard by the creek every day. He never wants to come inside! We are so grateful he made his way from Chicago to our dog daycare program in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Thank you for letting us love him!

Get to know Skye!

Meet Skye

Skye is our wildlife lover extraordinaire - She owns dogs, cats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, mice, a rabbit, and even owns and breeds lineaged sugar gliders! She has had every pet you can think of under the sun, and if she hasn’t then she surely has cared for it with all of her love and energy. Skye grew up on a lake in West Michigan where fishing, camping, swimming, and caring for animals have always been part of her daily life.

When Skye’s not studying digital arts at college, making jewelry, blowing glass, or doing ceramics, she is at Brooknelle where she’s able to love each and every dog + cat who comes through like they’re her own (and send tons of photos to pet parents of all the fun their babies are having). Finding a place at Brooknelle has also made her realize how much of a soft spot she has for helping dogs come out of their shell! She particularly loves aging pets and those who seem a little shy or nervous.

Skye dreams of opening her own licensed wildlife rehab center at her home within the next five years after she finishes getting her degree alongside being a freelance photographer. Until then, she looks forward to meeting everyone walking through the doors for dog daycare, pet boarding, grooming, and training at Brooknelle Pet Hotel!

Meet Hank!

How did you find Hank?
I have always wanted a Toy Poodle, he's my dream come true! I lived in Wisconsin at the time and he was born in Indiana. I brought him home at 8 weeks old and he's been my little companion ever since.

What is your favorite thing about his personality?
He is so, so fun. He loves everyone and is so outgoing and energetic. He is just FUN!

Hank's favorite treats/toys are: hot dogs and a ball to fetch

How does coming to daycare help Hank?
Daycare at Brooknelle is a game changer. I have to work at my office 3 days a week and I don't know what I would do without Brooknelle taking care of my baby for those 9+ hours on my office days. I pick him up after work and he is happy; mentally and physically taken care of... ready to just cuddle with me on the couch after a long day.

Handsome Hank has a collection of different sweaters to keep him warm on winter days. If you've stopped by Brooknelle for a tour or you regularly board with us, there's a good chance you've seen him. Hank loves every person + dog he's met so far, and the feeling is always entirely mutual.

A Guide for Pet Parents

As a pet owner, one of the best ways to show your dog love and care is through regular grooming . Not only does it keep your dog looking and smelling great, it also plays a crucial role in their overall well-being. From coat condition to skin health, grooming helps prevent (and potentially identify) a range of skin/coat issues that could affect your furry friend.

How often should your dog be going to the groomer? The answer varies based on several factors, including breed, coat type, and your dog's activity level. Let’s break it down so you can create the ideal schedule for your pup!

Short-Haired Dogs (Once Every 4-6 Weeks)

If your dog has a short, smooth coat (think Beagle , Boxer , or Chihuahua ) , they typically require less grooming than long-haired breeds. While these dogs don't need frequent trimming, regular grooming is still essential.

Why? Short-haired dogs still shed, and their coat can collect dirt and debris. Brushing once a week helps remove loose hairs and prevents them from ending up around the house. A bath every 4 to 6 weeks will keep your dog clean and odor-free.

Long-Haired Dogs (Every 4-8 Weeks)

Breeds like the Shih Tzu , Yorkshire Terrier , or Afghan Hound are known for their long, flowing coats that require more maintenance. These dogs often need grooming every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on their coat’s condition and the type of grooming they receive.

Why? Long-haired dogs can easily become tangled or matted , which can cause discomfort and possibly skin problems. They require more frequent brushing (at least 3-4 times a week) to keep their coats free from knots and tangles. Regular trims and baths helps to prevent matting.

Curly/Wavy-Coated Dogs (Every 6-8 Weeks)

Breeds like Poodles , Schnauzers , and Cockapoos have curly or wavy coats that grow constantly. This type of coat tends to mat easily if not properly maintained, so regular grooming is a must.

Why? Curly coats trap shedding hair and debris more than straight hair, leading to mats. These dogs need to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks to ensure their coats stay in top condition. In addition to regular baths, they require brushing 2 to 3 times a week to prevent tangles and mats.

Double-Coated Dogs (Every 6-8 Weeks)

Double-coated dogs like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds have two layers of fur: a thick undercoat and a longer outer coat. These breeds shed heavily during shedding seasons (spring and fall), and regular grooming is essential to prevent mats and tangles, as well as to manage shedding.

Why? Regular grooming helps remove loose hair and reduces the chance of mats forming in the undercoat. Double-coated dogs need professional grooming at least once every 6 to 8 weeks, and more frequently during shedding periods. At home, regular brushing (3 to 4 times a week) will help with shedding.

Puppies and Senior Dogs (As Needed)

Puppies may not need as frequent grooming as adult dogs, but they still benefit from early grooming sessions to get them used to the process. A gentle brushing and occasional bath are typically sufficient for most puppies.

Why? Starting grooming routines early helps establish good habits and makes grooming a stress-free experience for your pup as they grow older .

Senior dogs may have special grooming needs based on health or mobility concerns. Some senior dogs need less frequent grooming, while others may need extra care if they suffer from arthritis or obesity. Be sure to let us know when scheduling grooming appointments if your 4-legged best friend has any medical concerns.

Signs Your Dog Needs Grooming Sooner:

Even if your dog’s breed doesn’t require regular grooming, you may need to groom them more often if you notice any of the following signs:

Excessive shedding : If your dog’s shedding seems out of control, it may be time for a grooming session to help remove loose fur and prevent mats
Odor : A strong odor from your dog can signal that it's time for a bath, even if it's not yet your usual grooming appointment
Visible mats or tangles : If your dog’s fur is starting to mat or tangle, it’s time for a trim to keep things neat and comfortable
Dirty paws : If your dog enjoys outdoor adventures, their paws may accumulate dirt or mud. Regular foot grooming can help prevent debris buildup
A skunk encounter : Hopefully your dog never needs this service, but our certified groomer will take good care of them if they do.

Introducing our pro Animal Care Taker (and someday Dog Groomer) Ella!

Growing up in the country and on the beautiful Great Lakes of Northern Michigan is where Ella’s love of animals and nature bloomed. Early morning care of horses, dogs, cats, bugs, and any other animal in nature that needed help has always brought her joy.

Ella enjoys fishing, boating, off roading, camping, and hiking with her dog Kody. Kody is her best friend; he is a beautiful red fox lab who loves to come to work with Ella. He is every dog’s buddy! Kody taught Ella to be patient and live life in the moment.

Ella has been part of the Brooknelle Pet Hotel team since day one and is adored by every cat, dog, and human who comes through the door. We are so lucky to have her as part of our Animal Care Team!

If you're planning to board your pet during the winter months, you may be wondering how they will stay active, entertained, and mentally stimulated while you're away. Luckily, there are plenty of indoor enrichment activities that can keep your them happy, engaged, and relaxed during their stay. At Brooknelle Pet Hotel, we make it a priority to provide stimulating, fun, and cozy activities to keep your furry friend entertained all winter long.

Here are some of our favorite winter pet enrichment activities to ensure your pet’s stay is full of joy—even when it's cold outside.

Interactive Toys and Puzzles

When the weather outside is frightful, indoor enrichment becomes even more important. Interactive toys and puzzles are an excellent way to engage your pet’s brain and keep them occupied for hours.

Puzzle Feeders/Lick Mats: Dogs and cats alike love puzzle feeders that challenge them to work for their food. These can be filled with treats or meals, encouraging problem-solving and slowing down mealtime.
Kongs and Treat Dispensing Toys: For dogs, a stuffed Kong or treat-dispensing toy can be filled with peanut butter or their favorite treats, keeping them busy and mentally stimulated.

Sniff and Seek for Cats: Cats enjoy using their noses too. We hide catnip-filled toys or treats in various spots to encourage exploration and sniffing, giving them a satisfying and enriching experience.

Scent work is a fantastic way to tire out your pet, especially on days when they can’t get outside for a full walk.

Interactive Playtime and One-on-One Attention

Winter doesn’t have to mean staying cooped up—at Brooknelle, your pet will get plenty of love & attention from our staff!

Tug-of-War and Fetch: Our team loves engaging dogs in games of tug-of-war or fetch indoors. These activities help burn off excess energy and give your dog a chance to bond with their caregivers and other dogs. (Please note that dogs are only blended with other dogs based on owner request/matched temperament)
Interactive Play for Cats: For our feline friends, we use a variety of toys to engage them in one-on-one play sessions. Wand toys, balls, and crinkly cat toys can simulate hunting behavior and keep your cat active and engaged.

Calming and Relaxing Activities
